COMMENTS
I purposely left out two of my favorite albums because they're (in) Dutch and nobody else would probably vote for them anyway. They are both rap albums. Dutch rap is doing great, people aren't trying to sound American anymore, producers are finding their own sound. My faves this year have been Begin Twintig ("Early Twenties") by The Opposites (like a lot of Dutch rappers, they have English names from when they started out rapping in English) and Fakkelteit (wordplay on faculteit, "faculty", and fakkel - tijd, "torch" [i.e. weed] "time") by Sticks & Delic, two-thirds (an mc and the producer) of Holland's top hip-hop group Opgezwolle (from the city of Zwolle, opgezwollen meaning "swollen"). Both have been released by Top Notch, which signs all the best Dutch hip-hop, among them Extince, who rap fans in this country regard the same way their US counterparts regard Jay-Z, i.e. untouchably the best. Because Holland is relatively tiny (16 million people) and because hip-hop is not a mainstream genre here, needless to say, Extince is nowhere near a multi-millionaire. :-)
