Notes & qualifications:

It took me a year and a half and a spell of cold weather for me to really see why everyone liked Alligator; so it's possible that on a warm day in Autumn 2008 I'll feel really bad about leaving Boxer off of my 2007 lists. But for now, I already had too many and not enough space; so it will have to wait for regrets lists.

I was also stuck on whether Writers Block counted as a 2007 release. I listened to it like crazy during the spring, but it was out elsewhere and all over the place here in 2006; so I tried to play by a conservative interpretation of the rules and only included "Objects of My Affection" in the singles category. With "All My Friends", it made a nice duet about how growing up isn't entirely terrible.

With only ten spots, I didn't have room for sentimental favorites like Cassadaga, the Broken String, For Emma, Forever Ago and Voxtrot; technically stunning albums like Strawberry Jam and Atlas; or even time to listen to Untrue, Kala, or Sky Blue Sky; or anything especially dancey like Cross. Instead, I tried to stick with records that, for one reason or another, climbed to the top of my iPod playlist demanding to be played over and over again until I worried for my fragile mental health.

For artists of the year, obviously Radiohead changed the universe with the pay-what-you-like/"no really" model; Daft Punk toured the world in their giant magical pyramid of human-robot love and rolled out the red carpet for acts like Justice; Girl Talk got big enough for Greg Gillis to finally quit his day job and teaching the kids to dance again; a few years ago, Harry and the Potters started something huge — was there any decent sized city without a bookstore having wizard rock acts playing up until the clock struck 29 July — that culminated in 2007; and La Blogotheque made music videos essentials again with their takeaway shows (or maybe that was OK Go and treadmills).

I did not, to my knowledge, listen to a single reissue all year.
