COMMENTS
Rihanna and Feist both had the records of the year for similar reasons: When I first heard "Umbrella," it made me want to be a hip-hop producer — a pioneer of dirty synth breakbeats and delicately catchy vocal edits, intent on finding my own diva muse.
When I first heard "The Reminder," however, I felt compelled to lock myself up in a Parisian apartment with an acoustic guitar and a handful of hand-clapping friends; I wanted to sing on a bus with Jimmy Kimmel gawking at me. Feist's massive success this year couldn't obscure the fact that — for at least as long as it took before she appeared in that iPod commercial — "The Reminder" did what all classic records should do: It didn't make me want to meet Feist as much as it made me want to be her.
So why did I decide that Siobhan Donaghy was the artist of the year? Because somehow, after listening to "Ghosts," you never get the feeling that her transformation from Sugababes tween-diva to Elizabeth Fraser-understudy was anything but linear. And that's quite a hat trick, people.
