Well done.
Seems so easy now for everyone to knock JM but there wasn't another record in 2007 that I listened to almost every day. I remember the day it was released I was very pleasantly surprised that LCD had moved forward so confidently from the first record. The fact that the live show blew my face off just confirmed how great SOS was.

Now if only my #2 of 07 had shown up in any poll: A Sunny Day In Glasgow.

menyc

@DavidWatts: I totally agree. I mean, I love "All My Friends", but it's pretty much a New Order song with better lyrics, worse drumming, and no Peter Hook. It's my fave song of the year, so don't get me wrong here, but it's a little more than pastiche. I thought the last record had more diversity, so I like it more. This sentiment, strangely enough, is echoed amongst almost everyone I talk to, but I don't see it represented among critical assessments of the record.

I will say this is a nice piece, and it made me go back to the record again. I still think it's three singles and a few b-sides, but it made me go back to it!

Big Gray.

Another brilliant piece of writing. You getting sentimental in yr old age, Jessums? If so, it's worth it.

jetblackturd

"now only hints of Eno, shades of Byrne, intimations of Mark E. Smith." True, he has graduated from just saying these people's names to playing music like them, but I find his stylistic homages to be a little too on the nose. Too much of an "I like this stuff" kind of thing. But I guess that's his whole shtick. Personally, I would rather listen to an actual Eno record. But maybe I would have thought that The Stones sounded like rehashed Chuck Berry, I don't know.

I mean, it's a fun disc, but I've really been surprised by all the critical love. I mean, this record is to dance music as Maxim is to porn. If I want to dance, I'll listen to some actual dance or actual rock. Not this hybrid that tries to be all things to all people. But I guess it works for a lot of people.

DavidWatts

Great essay, I also pretty much lived with "Sound of Silver" in 07. The "Thank God it isn't Radiohead" sentiment is just gravy.

SuperUnison
